Chemical Spill Procedure

Never proceed to clean up a spill if you do not know that hazards associated with the chemical or if you are unsure how to clean up the spill. Contact Property Manager for spill assistance or immediately call 911.

In the event of a Chemical Spill

  1. Alert all people in area. Call appropriate authorities if necessary.
  2. Determine what chemicals were involved in spill.
  3. If someone has been splashed with chemicals, immediately escort them to emergency safety shower/eyewash. Call 911 or seek medical attention immediately.
  4. Provide the dispatcher with the following information:
    • Name
    • Type of Emergency
    • Company Name
    • Physical Building Address [not building name]
    • Suite Number
    • Telephone Number
    • Location of Substance
    • Description of Substance
    • Amount of Substance and Size of Contaminated Area
    • Odor
    • Symptoms
    • Injuries
  5. Choose appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear including safety goggles, gloves, etc. Access to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) should be available in your work area or by asking your immediate supervisor.
  6. Prevent the spreading of spill over a large area. Use a commercial spill kit or absorbent material to contain leaking. If leak reaches soil or water MA DEP must be contacted.
  7. Place all saturated and absorbed waste/broken glass/soiled materials into hazardous waste disposal receptacle labeled “Hazardous Material”
  8. Remove and dispose of/clean all PPE used. Wash hands with soap & water.
  9. Replenish all materials used from spill kit.
